Alicia Alonso Dances On

Born in Cuba, Alicia Alonso became a prima ballerina assoluta despite facing many challenges with her eye sight. She trained in both Cuba and New York. She was well-known as an intensely dramatic dancer, and for her technical skills. In 1948, Alicia set up a dance school in Cuba. She used her years of knowledge and experience to teach hundreds of other dancers, many that went on to have very successful careers.

Ice Breaker: How Mabel Fairbanks Changed Figure Skating

In the 1930s, only white figure skaters were allowed in public ice rinks and to compete for gold medals, but Mabel Fairbanks wouldn't let that stop her. With skates too big and a heart full of dreams, Mabel beat the odds and broke down color barriers through sheer determination and athletic skill. Mabel became the first African-American woman to be inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
